UPDATE 02/10/14: The Laneway Festival 2015 lineup has been revealed!
Organisers of the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival have dropped some not so subtle hints about who punters might expect to see on the 2015 lineup, following the publishing of their South By Southwest 2014 “highlights”.
There’s no coded language to this, as Laneway wrote themselves on their Facebook, “read our SXSW recap and maybe get a 2015 line-up hint while you’re at it.” Most of their recount focused on their SXSW showcase, which featured the likes of Kirin J Callinan, Perfect Pussy, Glass Animals and Eagulls.
It was for the latter, Eagulls, that Laneway showed particular affection, not just for their performance at the Laneway Festival party, but at SXSW in general. “The Leeds act are a high intensity post-punk mix of early Clash meets Dinosaur Jr,” read Laneway’s review. “[They] mesmerised the packed but intimate crowd as front-man George Mitchell delivered a performance that his vocal chords barely withstood.”
The Creases were another reported standout at the showcase. “We’ve fallen hard for the Brisbane four-piece’s insanely catchy jangly-pop numbers and all signs point to a successful SXSW campaign for these chaps,” wrote Laneway. “Expect to see and hear more from them in the very near future.” While English singer/ producer SOHN impressed with his “angelic vocals” and “sound production”. “Get up to speed if you’re not familiar,” reads the piece.
Japanese four-piece Bo Ningen seemed a force to be reckoned with, described by Laneway as “an act one must experience live.” Adding, “be prepared for some of the most insane hair-flailing / face-pulling manouvers you’re likely to witness.” Similarly Fat White Family were described as simply “mental”. According to Laneway, the band “do an impressive job of summoning up the feral electric skronk blues of The Birthday Party then twisting and distorting it into their own magical brew.”
Laneway also had high praise for St. Vincent, Banks, The Preatures, Mutual Benefit and London’s Tourist. Check out the full list of highlights below. A similar showcase put on by Laneway organisers at last year’s South By Southwest saw performances by Chvrches, Parquet Courts, Vance Joy, XXYYXX, all of whom later appeared on the lineup for Laneway 2014.
