Thanks to some rather impressive technology, UK rapper M.I.A. and R&B singer Janelle Monáe have managed to perform virtual duets, appearing as holograms at each other’s shows on either side of the United States on the very same night.
Appearing at the launch of the new Audi A3, Monáe performed at Quixote Studios in Los Angeles, and M.I.A. appeared at SIR Stage37 in New York on the night of Thursday, 3rd April. Amateur footage, which Music Feeds readers can check out below, shows Monáe’s hologram joining M.I.A on stage during her performance of Bad Girls, which was the final song of her set. During her performance, M.I.A. reportedly told the crowd that her gold-banded metallic leggings were “hologram friendly”.
NME are reporting that in Los Angeles that night, Janelle Monáe finished her set with Q.U.E.E.N., and was joined for a verse by M.I.A.’s hologram. NME also stated that the performances were the first to include “integrated video mapping” and “3D projection mapping to add layered depth of field perception with animated graphic content”, resulting in “an electric never-before seen 3D bi-coastal performance”.
M.I.A. released her fourth studio album Matangi in late 2013. Janelle Monáe dropped her third album The Electric Lady last year as well.
