Thrash metal legends Metallica are reportedly set to be announced as the final headliner for Glastonbury 2014, following recent comments by Michael Eavis that the festival’s previously unnamed Saturday headliner “will be one of the biggest-selling bands in the world at the moment.”
According to The List, UK newspaper The Sun is reporting the band, who’d previously stated their desire to play the iconic British music festival, will make their Glastonbury debut joining fellow headliners Arcade Fire and Kasabian, who were confirmed in December and April respectively.
“We are expecting to announce the full line-up at the beginning of May and everything is now in place,” Eavis recently told the Bristol Post. “We are more than happy with the calibre of the acts and the headliner on Saturday will be one of the biggest-selling bands in the world at the moment.”
Meanwhile, back in October, the band’s outspoken drummer Lars Ulrich emphatically told MTV, “[Glastonbury] just looks like it would be a fun night out.. We’ve been fortunate enough to play every other festival on this planet numerous times, so Glastonbury is the only one that’s eluding us.”
Eavis had said that the 2014 headliners would be “three bands who haven’t played Glastonbury,” but this was contradicted by the announcement of Kasabian and Arcade Fire. However, Eavis’ recent comments pushed Metallica to the top of the list of speculated Saturday headliners.
While it’s important to note that there has not yet been any official word from Glastonbury organisers regarding Metallica’s alleged Glastonbury appearance, if confirmed, the announcement would end months of speculation that has so far surrounded everyone from Oasis, to David Bowie and Prince.
