UK rockers Royal Blood have played a hypnotic and suitably heavy cover of Lana Del Rey’s West Coast live on Dutch radio. Performing on 3FM, the duo took Del Rey’s radio-friendly Ultraviolence track, grunged it up just the right amount, then spat it straight out.
In their West Coast cover (below), Royal Blood bassist and singer Mike Kerr couples echoing bass distortion with some really dynamic vocals. The song’s slow-swaying chorus becomes a trudging groove with a moody guitar riff, as drummer Ben Thatcher bashes out a rolling rhythm. After the performance, the radio host calls the duo’s version “better than the original”.
Royal Blood’s self-titled debut album, which dropped in August this year, was recently shortlisted for the 2014 Mercury Prize alongside albums from artists such as FKA twigs, Anna Calvi and Jungle.
