The lineup for Falls Festival 2014/2015 is already packed with big names, including alt-J, Röyksopp & Robyn, Vance Joy and SBTRKT, but now it’s time to give some up-and-coming Tasmanian artists a chance to join in the fun.
Falls Festival organisers are calling on punters to help select which Tassie musicians should secure a paid spot on the festival’s Marion Bay lineup. Teaming up with a number of Tasmanian print media companies, Falls Festival are asking music-lovers to vote on who they think is worthy of playing at such a momentous event.
Here’s how it works: voting will soon open for the month of October over at the official Falls Festival website. The three acts who receive the most love from the voting public will then be added to the 2014 Marion Bay leg of the event.
So, without further ado, here’s who vying for a spot on the Falls lineup, and which publications are vouching for them.
Ursine (The Advocate)
North-west Tasmanian newspaper The Advocate are suggesting that indie-rockers Ursine will fit the bill, having called the band “Tasmania’s best college rock outfit”. The six-piece from Burnie, who formed in 2010, won first place in the 2013 Tasmanian Rock Challenge.
Ursine’s sound comes complete with bright guitar tones and some strong melodic hooks, and has even been described as “froth-rock” in a press release, for some reason.

Paper Souls (The Examiner)
The Examiner are supporting folk-rock outfit Paper Souls for a spot on the Falls lineup. Frontman Luke Triffitt recently told the paper that the band were very happy to win the paper’s sponsorship. “I guess in a way [we were] absolutely surprised, it’s nice, it’s kind of humbling I suppose,” Triffitt said. “There are actually so many good bands and good musicians in Launceston at the moment.”
Paper Souls’ sound centres around husband and wife duo Luke and Sarah Triffitt, with Sarah’s harmonies often contrasting with Luke’s vocals. The band have a dark, moody sound at times, and also employ the use of a cello. Watch them play Small Hands at The Junction Arts Festival in September in the video below.

Verticoli (The Mercury)
The Mercury reckon that heavy-riffing Hobart trio Verticoli may claim the crown this year, and go on to tear Falls Festival apart. Speaking of the group, The Mercury have offered their support, saying, “Verticoli’s energetic and dynamic live performances have won them a dedicated local following in the past two years and we think they’d be worthy winners.”
Verticoli’s alternative rock tones recall the early days of Silverchair and Pearl Jam. “Verticoli carry a simple ethos of delivering fun, fierce and energetic indie rock that’s rough around the edges,” the group’s triple j Unearthed page reads. Catch the new music video for song DFA, below.

Dark Matter Of Story Telling (Togatus)
University Of Tasmania publication Togatus are putting their name behind Hobart ambient psych-rock group Dark Matter Of Story Telling. The four-piece have quite a progressive and cinematic sound, delving deeply into narratives through the lyrics of frontman Sam Forsythe, just as their band name suggests.
The ABC have called Dark Matter Of Story Telling a “conceptual indie rock band”, and rightly so. The group released their debut EP, The Battle With Self, in July 2013. Listen to EP cut Art Of Darkness, below.

LEWES (Warp Magazine)
Tasmanian street-press publication Warp Magazine are lending their name to post-rock collective LEWES, who dabble in “cute guitar riffs”. Comprised of members from both England and Australia, the five-piece are now based in Hobart, where they’ve honed their craft.
LEWES’ dynamic sound, which holds echoes of bands like Daughter and the Falls-bound alt-J, often escalates from quite introspection into an all-out attack on the senses, with plenty of guitar work pushing it along. The band released their debut EP Equinox earlier this year. Listen to the EP’s first single, Blood, below.

Jed Appleton (Aphra)
Last but certainly not least, Aphra have named 18-year-old Hobart singer-songwriter Jed Appleton as the one to beat. Appleton performs solo, or with a six-piece band, and has been described by the publication as a man of “earnest lyrics”.
Jed Appleton’s stripped-back folk songwriting has an undeniably warm charm to it, and often flirts with roots music as well. Catch the music video for the song Get Off Your Porch, taken from the forthcoming album Why Should I Stay, below. Appleton’s new single Home is also set to be released today.
