The Preatures‘ debut album, Blue Planet Eyes, may only have dropped in September, but that doesn’t mean the young Sydney act are kicking back. According to a recent profile piece, the band are already well into planning their follow-up record.
CoS reports that the band have been using downtime on their just-completed US tour to get their heads around ideas for album number two. Guitarist Jack Moffitt says, for The Preatures in particular, stagnation is a mortal enemy.
“You can’t just sit around and do nothing,” Moffitt told CoS. “For a lot of bands, they need time, but for us, we’ve realized that too much time is going to kill us. We’ve got ideas and those ideas only have a certain shelf life before their vitality starts to die.”
Singer Izzi Manfredi has reportedly taken on a bigger role in writing new tunes and “spends most of the day humming melodies and writing lyrics in her head”. She too struggled with post-Blue Planet Eyes life, and had become somewhat cynical towards music in general. “I started to hate everything: If it’s good, it pisses me off, and if it’s bad, it just makes me angry.”
Thankfully a fix of The War On Drugs shook her case of the sads. “I just keep playing it over and over again. Stuff like that makes me have faith in music again.”
Manfredi also explained the band’s diversity in sound, giving us further insight into The Preatures’ songwriting process. “We’ve always just looked at songs and worked from what the song is doing and what is best for the song. The sounds always come as an aside to that.” Read the full article over at CoS.
Blue Planet Eyes made its ARIA Chart debut at number four in its week of release. The album has only been released digitally Stateside but a physical release is set for later this month. It has also been nominated for the J Award Album Of The Year.
The Preatures are returning to Australia for a national tour in November. The band will also be a part of next year’s triple j’s Beat The Drum 40th anniversary concert.
