HBO will premiere Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, the first fully authorised documentary on the life of the late Nirvana frontman, in 2015. The film, created by Brett Morgen, has also seen contributions from Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean, who is credited as executive producer.
Montage of Heck was created with the support of Kurt Cobain‘s family. Morgen has outlined the process behind the film in a press release, detailing the amazing artifacts he has uncovered.
“I started work on this project eight years ago. Like most people, when I started, I figured there would be limited amounts of fresh material to unearth,” Morgen said.
“However, once I stepped into Kurt’s archive, I discovered over 200 hours of unreleased music and audio, a vast array of art projects (oil paintings, sculptures), countless hours of never-before-seen home movies, and over 4000 pages of writings that together help paint an intimate portrait of an artist who rarely revealed himself to the media.”
According to the press release, Montage of Heck includes “dozens of Nirvana songs and performances as well as previously unheard Cobain originals.”
Its creators have said it provides “no-holds-barred access to Kurt Cobain’s archives, home to his never-before-seen home movies, recordings, artwork, photography, journals, demos, personal archives, family archives and songbooks”. Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, was reportedly not mentioned in the press release.
Montage of Heck takes its name from a mixtape Cobain created in the late 1980s, which resurfaced online earlier this month. The documentary remains without any official premiere date.
