American funk rock superstars Red Hot Chili Peppers have let slip more details about their forthcoming album, with a now-deleted tweet indicating the band are working with none other than Brian Joseph Burton, a.k.a. Danger Mouse.
Chilis bass destroyer Flea outed the brains behind Gnarls Barkley and Broken Bells as the man at the helm of the band’s 11th studio effort in a social media post over the weekend. The tweet was soon deleted but, as usual, the internet was too quick on the draw (screenshot below).
“Bout to start recording. Danger Mouse producing…. Let’s hang soon,” the bassist tweeted.
The collaboration with Burton, whose CV also includes work with bands as diverse as U2, Beck, MF Doom and The Black Keys, represents a massive shift for the Chili Peppers. They’ve worked with bearded sound sculptor Rick Rubin on every one of their albums since 1991’s Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
Considering Burton has produced some of the biggest hits of the last 10 years, including Gnarls Barkley’s enduring hit, Crazy, this new team-up could be just the refresher the Chili Peppers need to revitalise their sound.
Drummer and Will Ferrell doppleganger Chad Smith confirmed to Rolling Stone last year that the band had been working with “an unnamed producer”, who was challenging them to find new ways to come up with new music.
“We’ve done the ‘guys get in the room and jam out songs, everybody playing together all at once’ thing. And we wrote a bunch of songs that way. And we’re now going to try another method that will be really challenging for us and will bring new, exciting results for the band,” he said.
The Chilis have also confirmed that the “super danceable” and “introspective” new record will be released later this year, and accompanied by a world tour.
