The 2015 Grammy Awards have just wrapped up at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles, with a who’s who of popular music gathering to claim awards and pat each other on the back.
The dominating winner of the night was English singer-songwriter Sam Smith, who took out the Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year for Stay With Me. Upon accepting the his final award, Smith thanked the man who his debut album was all about. “I want to say thank you so much to the man I fell in love with last year,” Smith said. “Thank you for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.”
The award for Album of the year went to Beck for 2014’s Morning Phase. Beck himself seemed surprised about the win which saw him trump fellow nominees Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, Ed Sheeran and the man of the night Sam Smith. He was presented the Grammy by a very shiny Prince.
Beck’s acceptance speech almost saw a repeat of Kanye West’s infamous “Imma let you finish” moment from the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards moment, when tonight Yeezy jokingly rushed on stage as if to protest, yet again, against Beyonce’s loss.

It was an otherwise big night for Kanye West, who took centre stage beneath a single white spotlight to perform his Paul McCartney collaboration, Only One. Kanye returned to the stage again, this time with McCartney and Rihanna for the live debut of their collaboration FourFiveSeconds. Kanye revealed before the show that he is an executive producer of Rihanna’s new album.

Early announcements from the Grammys saw some Australians recognised for their work earlier today, including producer M-Phazes and South African born Melbourne-based composer Wouter Kellerman. Australian hopeful Iggy Azalea failed to nab any of the four Grammys she was up for, losing out to Eminem in the Best Rap Album category. Sia too was up for four awards but walked away with none.
The 2015 Grammys also saw a number of other interesting onstage performances and unique collaborations. AC/DC kicked things off by performing their recent single Rock Or Bust and old favourite Highway To Hell, helped along by old/new drummer Chris Slade and a teleprompter.

Not deterred by her Grammy loss, Sia was at it again with an expectedly bizarre Chandelier performance. Her performance was introduced by a poem read by the Elastic Heart video star Shia LaBeouf, while Sia was accompanied onstage again by dancer Maddie Ziegler and former Saturday Night Live actress Kristen Wiig.

The 2015 Grammys also saw an emotional performance by Beyoncé, who sang the gospel song Take My Hand Precious Lord as a prelude to John Legend and Common’s rendition of their Oscar-nominated song Glory from the movie Selma.
Following her grandiose Super Bowl halftime show, Katy Perry used her Grammy performance of By the Grace of God, to put a spotlight on issues of domestic abuse. The song was introduced by a video message from US President Obama and an emotional speech from domestic violence surviver and activist Brooke Axtell.

Other artists to perform at the ceremony included Madonna, Ariana Grande, Beck and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Ed Sheeran with Electric Light Orchestra and Questlove, Adam Levine and Gwen Stefani, Sam Smith with Mary J. Blige, Pharrell and Lady Gaga with Tony Bennett.
