Watch The Genesis Of The Nirvana Name In A New ‘Montage Of Heck’ Clip

Nirvana fans had their heart-shaped boxes lifted this week, after learning that the critically acclaimed new Kurt Cobain documentary Montage Of Heck would be getting a limited Australian release.

Today, we’ve been given not one, but two more reasons to get excited about what will, by all accounts, be a nostalgic 90’s weep-fest about one of the decade’s most worshipped cultural icons, with a pair of fresh teaser clips being released.

In the first video, an excerpt from the film offered up by The Guardian, pages from Cobain’s personal diaries are animated to show the litany of rejected band names the frontman toyed with before settling on ‘Nirvana’. Some of those unlucky runners-up include Fecal Matter, Skid Row (before Sebastian Bach’s glam metal act got big), Bliss, Erectum, The Mandibles, Labido, Boy in Heat and Man Bug.

The second video plays out as a two-minute teaser interview with the doco’s Academy Award Nominated writer, producer and director, Brett Morgen, who chats about his experiences making the film with unprecedented, intimate access to Cobain’s family and personal archives.

“From the moment Kurt Cobain burst into the public scene with Smells Like Teen Spirit, there has been an absolute cultural obsession with Kurt,” Morgen explains. “But Kurt had very limited interactions with media during his lifetime, and so the public’s perception of Kurt, for the most part over the course of the last 25 years, has been heavily steeped in mythology and projection and fantasy. And with Montage Of Heck, for the first time, audiences are going to meet Kurt Cobain. It’s an immersive ride through Kurt’s life.”

The latest clips from the documentary come hot on the heels of its official theatrical trailer. It’s also set to feature previously unheard music from Cobain, with one track described as “a mind blowing 12 minute acoustic Cobain unheard track”.

Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, which premiered at the iconic Sundance Film Festival on January 24th, will hit Australians silver screens on Thursday May 7th.
