Tonight Alive’s Drummer Needs Surgery After Injuring Himself At Soundwave

Drummer Matt Best of Sydney pop punk thoroughbreds Tonight Alive will have to undergo surgery for tendinosis next time he returns to Australia. The beatman was diagnosed with the condition after sustaining tears to his wrist ligaments and cartilage during one of the band’s last homecoming performances for Soundwave 2015.

The band has been forced to pull out of two headlining shows in Idaho and Florida to give Bestie a chance for some much needed R & R. Jenna McDougall & co are currently supporting All Time Low across the US and, at the time of writing, are still committed to playing all scheduled dates on that tour.

Tonight Alive have also been pretty flat chat since jet-setting back to the US post-Soundwave. Not only have they been touring relentlessly, they’ve also been hitting the studio with producer David Bendeth (Paramore, Underoath), recording what will become their third full-length album.

But it seems that, too, has taken its toll on Best. In a statement posted on Tonight Alive’s official Facebook page (which now appears to have been deleted), the drummer details the full extent of his injuries. The statement reads (via Alt Press):

“Hey guys,

I’m really sorry to say that we have to cancel the upcoming Boise, ID and Jacksonville, FL headline shows.

I was recently diagnosed with tendinosis and tears within the TFCC (ligaments and cartilage) of my wrist during Soundwave 2015. Although it’s been very painful to play, I’ve been getting through the album recording and All Time Low shows with a lot of painkillers and 24/7 care but it’s been getting harder and I’m having more trouble than I thought. Right now we’ve realized that there is just no way I would be able to play a full headline show. The All Time Low support shows are 30 minutes long and I’m only just about getting through them. I’m in need of surgery as soon as I get back to Australia, so I’ll be fit and ready to go on the next tour providing the rehab goes well. We really hate to cancel any shows and we promise to come back to Boise and Jacksonville just as soon as we can. I’m sorry for any inconveniences that may occur from this.

Since posting the statement, Best has also posted on his personal Twitter account, thanking fans for the outpouring of well-wishes.
