Ryan Adams is a man of his word and when he tells you he’s started covering every song on Taylor Swift’s smash hit album 1989, you better believe him. Then again, if it’s concrete proof you’re after, he’s got that too.
After announcing his project on social media this week and effectively making Taylor Swift‘s head explode in the process, Adams has now begun sharing snippets of the covers and they’re just as heartfelt and moody as you might expect.
Adams has previewed snippets (below) of his takes on Swift’s tracks Out of the Woods and All You Had to Do Was Stay, after already sharing a clip of a “Guaranteed saddest version of ‘Welcome to New York’ ever — or your tears back.”
Adams has also shed a bit more light on the sonic direction on some of the other covers. His “spooky” version of Shake It Off, is apparently arranged like Bruce Springsteen’s I’m On Fire and “sounds like it could have been in True Detective in a driving scene or smthng.”
He’s also likened his version of Out of the Woods to the Smiths’ That Joke Isn’t Funny Anymore, and says it’s “maybe the best sad song I ever did.”
No word on when the project will be available in full but Adams has also posted art to go with the covers project that, as reported by Pitchfork, riffs off Sonic Youth’s legendary Goo cover. I need it on a t-shirt stat.
