In Hearts Wake have bum rushed the triple j studio this fine Friday to drop a mind-blowing cover of their Byron Bay brethren Parkway Drive’s song Vice Grip for Like A Version.
After a stripped-back rendish of their Earthwalker LP track Wildflower, the metalcore fivesome made good on their hint that their impending cover related to the most frequently stolen street sign in Australia (as if you didn’t know), by tackling the lead single from Parkway Drive’s new LP, Ire.
But those expecting ear-blood were disappointed (at least at first): the lads turned the Parkway crusher into an eerie, soaring ballad.
As with many Like A Versions that we’ve witnessed over the years, In Hearts Wake’s interpretation has transformed the rabid metal beast into something almost completely unrecognisable, infusing it with passionate, undulating melodies, ghostly backing vocals and delicate, haunting guitar layers.
Perhaps most impressive are frontman Jake Taylor’s towering vocals, which smoke with light and shade as he plays between big gritty monster notes and delicate, goose-bumpy falsettos.
Like A Version of the year, anyone?
During their visit to triple j, In Hearts Wake also outed themselves as the first act confirmed on the lineup for the massive UNIFY Gathering festival for 2016.
The band are currently in the midst of a regional tour for their new Skywalker LP, before heading to the ‘States with the Parkway boys for an all-out Aussie metal assault.
They even dedicated their Like A Version performance to a lady who lives on Parkway’s titular street in Byron, who they reckon helps out with all their local shows up there. Bless!
