After several months of premature speculation in the media, Powderfinger have announced they will be splitting up after their coming ‘Sunsets’ tour.
Front man Bernard Fanning sat centre at the press conference, surrounded by his fellow band mates and made the announcement after details of the tour had been given. The wordsmith read aloud (with some unease) a media release and by way of explanation, said the band had achieved musically, all that they wanted.
The ‘Fingers, as they’re endearingly known, have made an incredibly rich contribution to the Australian music scene over the last fifteen years and helped revive a live music industry that was almost in the grave. Along with that achievement, they’ve also won sixteen ARIA Awards, released seven studio albums, two DVD’s and a live album. They’re continuing to show their generosity on the ‘Sunsets’ tour by teaming up with Yalari, an organisation that assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from regional, rural and remote communities receive the highest levels of education available in Australian boarding schools.
During September and October, the ‘Fingers will play 21 dates across all states and territories and will be supported by The Vines for three gigs and Jet for the remainder of the tour. Expect to hear tracks from their seven albums (they’re not going to re-live ‘Parables…’) and rather than a tear-fest, the tour is set to be a celebration with their fans. They’ve also admitted they have no plans to follow John Farnham’s ‘Last Time Tour’ marketing strategies – these boys mean business. See you in the front row.
