With a sound that takes us back to the days of grunge rock and classical tunes, Papa Vs Pretty’s Thomas Rawle explains to Music Feeds how best to describe their yet to be released EP, Heavy Harm. After a big 2009, jumping around to different genres and going through a bizarre funk stage, Papa Vs Pretty have found their fitted shoes.
“We were knuckled down for months trying to work out our new sound. We wrote new material and found a cohesive sound we wanted and found our musical identity.” Scoring a deal with new label Peace & Riot, a subsidiary of EMI, they made no fuss getting in the studio and on with the recording, with help from Paul Dempsey.
Keeping well and truly away from electro-instrumental pieces of equipment, the band of three takes a step back to re-live the Hendrix years.
“We’ve been keeping it old and working out our own sounds, and of course making it work in the studio. Trying to keep it interesting with the music dynamics and chord changes”, explains Tom. “We’re heading into this grunge psychedelic sound and it’s giving us this Queens of The Stone Age feel, which is cool.”
The first single from their new EP is title track ‘Heavy Harm’. “It’s quite different from the other tracks,” Thomas says. “There’s this finger picking on the guitar, which sounds really bizarre, but I like it and I hope others do as well.”
Setting themselves a new direction, and a progression of their sound, the new EP is due out in August and establishes the groundwork for a new Papa Vs Pretty. It feels as if they’ve sorted it out, and this Friday night will be the perfect opportunity to get the guys on stage. There’s a bit of classic grunge in us all, after all. This time around it’s the young playing the old, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
