ARIA released their end of year charts for 2015 today, with Mark Ronson‘s Uptown Funk named No. 1 single and Adele‘s 25 taking out No. 1 album of the year.
Featuring the vocal talents of the ever impeccably coiffed Bruno Mars, Uptown Funk was a global sensation, proving to be the year’s most popular single in Australia despite being released in the middle of winter. Already accredited nine times platinum since it’s release, it spent two weeks at number one, 15 weeks in the top 10, and did not leave the top 100 for the entire year. Not to mention giving funk fans the world over a sliver of hope for pop music.
Adele is the really big winner here though, her third studio album 25 winning the top spot on the albums chart after only six weeks since being released, already being certified 7x platinum. Her hit single off the album Hello also came in at No. 5 on the singles chart, the British songstress the only artist other than Justin Bieber to have top ten spots in both the album and singles chart.
Speaking of Bieber, he did pretty well for himself as well with his latest album Purpose being the fourth highest selling album of the year. The album’s lead single What Do You Mean meanwhile came in at No. 9 on the singles chart.
However, looking over the rest of the chart, it seems Aussie music buyers may be a little stuck in the past with albums from Ed Sheeran (X, No. 1 in 2014), Taylor Swift (1989, No. 2 in 2014) and Sam Smith (In The Lonely Hour, No. 6 in 2014) all enjoying their second year in the chart. Michael Bublé has put them all to shame though, the crooner’s 2011 album Christmas celebrating it’s fifth year in the chart. It makes sense though, what else but a Bublé christmas album do you buy your elderly spinster relatives or friends.
It’s not all overseas artist who profited from the Australian music market this year with 35 of the top 100 albums coming from aussies, 19 of those in the top 50. Country superstar Lee Kernaghan‘s Spirit Of The Anzacs was the highest ranked aussie album at No. 8, with Sia, Vance Joy and The 12th Man joining him in the top 20. More importantly though our boy Troye Sivan, while not cracking the top 20, also placed in the top 100, a great showing for such a young talent.
In the singles chart, Sia delivered the biggest local hit of 2015 with Elastic Heart coming in at No. 14. Jarryd James and Grace delivered the second and third biggest Australian results, with Do You Remember and You Don’t Own Me featuring G-Eazy finishing the year at No. 22 and No. 26 respectively.
