Laneway 2016 Act Magical Cloudz Have Announced They’re Breaking Up

It may only be less than a month since Laneway Festival rolled through the country but one of its acts have already announced they’re calling it quits.

Devon Welsh and Matthew Otto, better known as Majical Cloudz, have announced that after two LPs together they are going their separate ways.

The pair were in the country for the festival and a number of special headline shows in February and it seems that they were some of the last shows the band will ever play.

Welsh released records as Magical Cloudz before his first show with Otto in 2012 but most of the band’s success came after that date. They released two critically acclaimed records, 2013’s Impersonator and 2015’s Are You Alone?, as well as two EPs.

“Over the last few months Matt and I decided that Are You Alone? would be the last Majical Cloudz record, and that after doing some touring we would be moving on to other projects and adventures,” Welsh wrote on Facebook.

“Doing all these things made real what had been a dream for both us, and so the band was an opportunity for us to grow into the kinds of people and the kinds of artists we wanted to become. We both feel it to be the completion of something very positive.”

Despite the break up, it’s not the last we will hear from both of them. Welsh will be releasing solo material under his own name and Otto will be sharing music from his new project The Dahlia soon.

The duo will play their last show together in Montreal on 10th March.
