UPDATE 06/04/16: THE 2016 APRA Music Award winners have been announced.
Original Story: The nominations for the 2016 APRA Music Awards have been announced, with many Aussie favourites tipped for more than one prize.
Jarryd James is leading the pack, with nominations in the Song of the Year category (Do You Remember), Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year, Most Played Australian Work and Pop Work of the Year.
Similarly, Sia has been nominated four times, twice in the Most Played Australian Work category (for both Elastic Heart and Flashlight, which she wrote for Jessie J) and twice in the Pop Work of the Year category for the same songs.
Other artists up for more than one award include rock legends AC/DC, (Rock Work of the Year for both Rock or Bust and Play Ball), Perth five-piece Birds of Tokyo (Song of the Year and Rock Work of the Year) and electronic duo Peking Duk for Take Me Over (Dance Work of the Year and Most Played Australian Song).
In the hotly contested Song of the Year category, Jarryd James is joined by Birds of Tokyo (Anchor), Tame Impala (Let It Happen), Courtney Barnett (Pedestrian At Best) and C.W. Stoneking (The Zombie).
This year’s awards will see the introduction of the Overseas Recognition Award, a brand new category for APRA members based overseas and the finalists are Phil Barton, Sam Dixen, Kylie Sackley, Josef Salvat and Vassy.
As usual, a roster of international artists are being honoured, with Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, Mark Ronson and OMI nominated in the International Work of Year space.
Last year’s APRA winners include Sia, who casually grabbed the Best Song of the Year award with Chandelier (and historically won Songwriter of the Year for the third year in a row), 5SOS for their songwriting abilities and Sheppard and being most played.
This year’s winners will be announced during a ceremony hosted by writer, producer and comedian Brian Nankervis at Sydney’s Carriageworks on Tuesday 5 April. See the nominees below.
