After Vance Joy swept the competition last year taking out the grand prize with a perfect score for Riptide, a slew of Aussies have again been nominated for awards at the 2016 International Songwriting Competition.
The International Songwriting Competition (ISC) is an annual song contest aiming to provide opportunities for both amateur and professional songwriters to have their songs head in a professional environment. The contest has 68 categories from Jazz to EDM, Country and Latin, Pop to R&B.
This year there are 36 Australian acts and individual musicians have been nominated, including the likes of Pluto Jonze, Halfway, Roshani, Glades, Dustin Tebbutt, Rita Satch, Briggs and Tropical Zombie among a host of others.
Six Aussie acts have received nominations in multiple categories. Meg Mac‘s Never Be is in for AAA (Adult Album Alternative) while Roll Up Your Sleeves is nominated in the Performance category. Sydney band Falls are up for AAA with their track When We Were Young, while their other song That’s The Thing is nominated in the Folk Singer/Songwriter category.
Flight Facilities make got an EDM nom for Two Bodies Ft. Emma Louise, while their video for Clair De Lune was also recognised, and Seth Sentry‘s Hell Boy is nominated for R&B/Hip-Hop and Unsigned. Birds Of Tokyo‘s Anchor is nominated in the Rock and Pop/Top 40 sections, and finally Sydney group Stone Parade have three nominations: Don’t Let Me Go in the Rock category and It’s Only You And Me in both Pop/Top 40 and Adult Contemporary.
The competition, which is held in Nashville each year, is well-known for being judged by some of the biggest names in music. This year is no exception, with the judging panel including Tom Waits, Avicii and Hardwell, Lorde, Bastille, Keb Mo, Boyz II Men, Kesha, American Authors, Moby, Bill Withers and Pat Metheny.
Submissions are judged on a variety of criteria including creativity, originality, lyrics, melody and arrangement. This year 68 acts will take out awards, chosen from a pool of over 18 thousand entries.
