The music of Lady Gaga has reportedly been banned from China yet again, after the pop superstar met with the 14th Dalai Lama to discuss topics like kindness, compassion, yoga and mental health.
Mother Monster is said to have been added to a list of “hostile forces” banned by China’s Communist party, with Hong Kong’s pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily reporting the party’s propaganda department has issued “an important instruction” banning Gaga’s music from mainland China.
Chinese websites and media organisations have also supposedly been ordered to halt any uploading or distributing of Gaga’s music, while the propaganda department is also believed to have ordered party-controlled news outlets to condemn the meeting of Gaga and the Dalai Lama.
Gaga met with the Dalai Lama on Sunday in Indianapolis, as part of the United States Conference of Mayors. The singer has posted a 19-minute to Facebook of their chat, and there’s also footage of the pair speaking as part of a panel, below.
Lady Gaga has previously seen China ban her music in an attempt to censor “poor taste and vulgar content”, with six songs from her 2011 album Born This Way previously being prohibited in the country.
China has also banned the likes of Maroon 5, Oasis and Björk in the past, after they showed support for the Dalai Lama or for Tibetan independence.
The Dalai Lama says he is seeking greater autonomy for the people of Tibet who are under Chinese rule, but China’s rulers believe he is a separatist, and claim he is conspiring to split the Himalayan region from China.
