Getting geared up to hit the road for their summer tour, frontman of surf punk band Wavves Nathan Williams has taken to Twitter to make clear who is and isn’t welcome at the band’s shows. Publishing a lengthy note on their page, Williams made it very clear that in these times of social division and injustice, he feels it’s important to take a stand for what he believes in.
Listing anyone who supports #AllLivesMatter, anyone who has defended police in America, anyone who blames a rape victim for their own assault, and any homophobes, racists and Trump supporters – “bc this is basically 3 or 4 of the aforementioned topics” – as not being welcome at Wavves shows, the post was met with largely positive comments and lots of applause gifs and emojis.
Williams however also understands he may lose fans over this, but sees that as the cost of standing up against injustice and suffering.
“I’d rather have a room half filled with good energy than one filled with hate” he wrote, adding that “people are suffering everyday and the way I see it you are either part of the solution or part of the problem.”
With the prospect of having Donald Trump in the White House seeming ever more likely and with police shootings, like the recent death of Alton Sterling at the hands of Baton Rouge police officers, showing no signs of letting up, it’s understandable Williams feels so passionate.
And while he can’t exactly put pressure on congress to address any of theses issues, he can put pressure on his fans.
“Nobody is perfect (including myself) but I don’t want or need fans who don’t get this,” he wrote.
