Things were looking pretty grim, well, grimmer than usual for Metalocalypse mainstays Dethklok. 2015 saw the conclusion of the show’s fourth season with no word of it returning for a fifth. Now, it appears the minds behind the ‘Klok are up to no good once more, teasing fans with talk of new material to be released under the moniker of Galakticon 2 and it’s pure fucking Dethklok.
Speaking to Metal Hammer, acclaimed metal drummer Gene Hoglan (Testament, Death) revealed that he and Metalocalypse mastermind Brandon Small have completely recorded an album as Galakticon 2, and while there’s no sign of a release date yet, there’s plenty of reason for fans to be losing their shit.
“All I know is this Galakticon 2 album sure sounds a whole lot like Dethklok and sure has the approach of Dethklok….But it’s called Galakticon 2. That’s the name of the band because we can’t use Dethklok any more.”
The rights to Dethkolk remain firmly in the grasp of Adult Swim, who financed the animated series in which the band existed. Diehard fans are sure to be familiar with the first iteration of Galakticon, which was originally released as a concept comic book album. It was no secret that part II was in the works, however it appears now that rather than being a side project to Dethklok, it’s now the actual vessel for it.
In an earlier interview, Small actually explained that Galakticon II would take the place of Dethklok, adding it’s “only because the network has been less than easygoing about lending out the name.”
Now that the album is in the bag, Hoglan seems keen AF to release it into the grips of Dethklok’s cult like following, and for good reason.
“This new record we recorded is fucking amazing, it’s killer, and I’m stoked. It sure is a killer record we did, chock full of double bass, killer riffs, and all sorts of cool stuff, and I can’t wait to hear it when it’s done…It just happens to be called Galakticon 2. But it sure doesn’t sound like Galakticon 2 – it sure sounds like this other band we used to play for. Exactly like this other band!”
Hoglan explained he’s just as clueless as you or I about whether Galakticon II will receive its own animated adventure, but he doesn’t rule it out. Hoglan is also open to touring the new material with Small. Until then, however, dude’s just chuffed on his album.
“It’s not a Dethklok record, but it’s a fucking Dethklok record! It sounds exactly like Dethklok, the lyrics are fully Dethklok.”
Metalocalypse is an animated series following the trials and tribulations of true metal gods. The show first aired in 2006. Despite an hard fought battle to convince networks that the show had a strong fanbase, it failed to be renewed after the fifth season. Clearly beaten down by the decision, Small later went on to confess he’s “all but finished making Dethklok records.”
But not Dethklok-infused Galakticon records.
