Being interviewed ahead of the 15th anniversary of Slipknot‘s second album Iowa, the band’s frontman Corey Taylor has had some choice insights to share on why the band have so many haters.
In a wide-ranging interview with Alternative Press ahead of Taylor’s own Iowa episode on his Beats 1 radio show, the singer was only too happy to open up about why the band seems to inspire hatred in some people.
“You got to remember, long ago, people thought we were just gonna be in and out” he says.
Adding that people assumed the band “would turn into just a gimmick band that really just rested on its visuals”, Taylor says it was clear that “people forgot just how talented we fucking were”.
Taylor explains how the band’s ongoing success following Iowa is very much salt in the wound for their early detractors.
“Every album we put out is a reminder of that and it really pisses people off. Just when they think they have us flushed down the toilet, we come back and we reinvent everything,” he says. “It really infuriates people.”
Iowa is in a symbol of the band’s ability to overturn expectations and prove the haters wrong, according to Taylor, and it’s a source of pride to him.
“The first album really set the precedent, but Iowa really showed people that no matter what, you’re not going to be able to figure out what we’re going to do next. I’m really proud of that, man,” he says.
In the interview, Taylor also recalls why Iowa nearly didn’t get made, with the band discussing breaking up after their first album “just to pull a total Sex Pistols and make one monstrously fucking destructive album then just be like, ‘No, that’s all you fucking get, fuck you.’”
Taylor will be discussing all of this and more when he takes to the air at midday today on Apple Music’s Beats 1 station for a special Iowa edition of his show A Series Of Bleeps with Corey Taylor. He’ll also be playing tracks from artists which inspired him during the recording of Iowa.
