Beyoncé has stolen the show at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, and we can now marvel at her volcanic performance from afar, because it just might be one of the greatest things ever caught on camera.
Bey’s visual album Lemonade was an MVP at the awards, taking out the Breakthrough Long Form Video award and well, y’know, shifting the larger conversation in society regarding love, forgiveness, race and equality. It would be hard to capture such a zeitgeist-penetrating energy with just one track, so Beyoncé performed several from the album, bringing them all together for a rollercoaster medley.
The performance weaved between album tracks Pray You Catch Me, Hold Up, Sorry, Don’t Hurt Yourself and wrapping things up with Formation. All the while, just about anything that could happen on stage did happen.
Sure, Rhianna may have the clout to perform four seperate times throughout the night, but Bey just needed to do it once to receive The People’s nomination for Queen Of the 2016 VMAs. Beyoncé won a string of other awards on the night, including Video Of The Year (Formation), Best Female Video (Hold Up), Best Direction (Formation) and Best Cinematography (Formation).
