ORIGINAL STORY: Melbourne man Brendan Busch has announced that he’ll give away a ticket to Falls Festival 2017 to anyone who can prove that they’ve convinced triple j to change the date of its Hottest 100 countdown.
It’s a topic that has been trending recently, with many questioning whether its still appropriate to continue celebrating Australia’s national holiday on January 26th, and Busch contests that it is an insult for the ABC to encourage celebration on that date. Less than a month ago, a group called Bar(r)ed Subjects Collective started an online petition to move the date of the Hottest 100.
triple j has held its Hottest 100 competition on January 26th for the past 16 years, and the ABC and its youth broadcaster often broadcast messages of respect and acknowledgement for indigenous Australians on the day.
“NO ONE has any right to say they ‘acknowledge and respect’ peoples if they take part in oppressing them,” says Busch on the description for his campaign Facebook event.
Busch’s Facebook event provides several ways the public can contact triple j, and says that he will be contacting the station every day until the date is changed. He also says that the competition and giveaway is part of an effort to target the young demographic who listen to the countdown and use it as an excuse to “drink and party.”
“Sovereignty never ceded against an invasion which has justified and condoned violence, discrimination, rape, murder, oppression, dispossession, and now a widespread complacency to child murder – which we only know about thanks to Black Media,” Busch says.
As well as changing the date, the winning contestant must also convince triple j to apologise for not having changed the date for the past 16 years, and admit that “January 26th is the most un-Australian day of the year.”
Busch has not yet heard a response from triple j.
