Hip hop and soul singer Ladi6 has taken out the Taite Music Prize for her second album Liberation.
She beat out other top New Zealand acts including The Naked and Famous, Julia Deans, The Phoenix Foundation, Die! Die! Die! and Street Chant.
The Taite award, named after New Zealand music journalist Dylan Taite who passed away in 2003 is in its second year running. It comes with a $10,000 cash prize. Ladi6 has said that she and her collaborators will use the prize money “wisely” – using it to fund a six month European and UK tour and album release.
She also said this of the award in a statement “It is judged on true creativity and innovation, and both of these things are attributes in our music that we hope to always strive for. We are proud and honoured recipients, and hope always to push the envelope and progress creatively and artistically in our music”.
