Update: The winner of the Hottest 100 of 2017 has been announced
Triple M has followed through on its pledge to spend January 26th counting down its own bastardised version of triple j’s Hottest 100, The Ozzest 100. Unsurprisingly, much like the countless backyard BBQs the alternative countdown soundtracked, it was a total sausagefest.
To no one’s surprise, ‘Khe Sanh’ by Cold Chisel came in at #1, while the dad rockin’ top five was rounded out by Men at Work’s ‘Down Under’, Barnsey again with ‘Working Class Man’, Icehouse at #4 with ‘Great Southern Land’ and AC/DC’s ‘Long Way To The Top’ at #5. You find the complete list below.
Acca Dacca featured in the Ms’ “perfect Australia Day soundtrack” no less than seven times, which was the same number of songs on the list that featured a woman. As one Twitter user pointed out, three of those seven times were thanks to songs by the Divinyls. Seriously, not even any Baby Animals, The Superjesus or Spiderbait? Rude.
Meanwhile, despite their efforts to hijack the countdown, A.B. Original’s change-the-date anthem ‘January 26’ did not end up making it to the Triple M roll of honour.
ICYMI: Triple M got savaged – by both dissenters and fans of the station – for the decision to cash in on the removal of triple j’s Hottest 100 from the contentious date of January 26th – the ABC youth station made the decision to shift their much-loved countdown to a less politically charged day.
The long-awaited decision by triple j was made following a long public consultation process and marked a show of support for Indigenous Australians, who’ve long associated January 26th with the trauma of the British invasion and the massacres and cultural genocide that followed. But the Ms still mocked the js for robbing ‘Straya of its annual barbie soundtrack.
“So, the taxpayer funded FM has decided that there’ll be no soundtrack for Australia Day,” they wrote. “Let’s face it, that’s usually full of hipsters or kids making music on a Mac. At Triple M, we’re going to give you what you’ve asked for. The perfect Australia Day soundtrack.”
However, despite the massive initial backlash, the social media response to Triple M’s countdown has been fairly unremarkable. The biggest complaint seems to be that Daryl Braithwaite’s ‘The Horses’ didn’t chart higher:
