The DJ who admitted to headbutting former Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Hobart last year has been sentenced to six months in prison.
The ABC reports that DJ Astro Labe, 38, will be eligible for release after two months, upon which he will be required to pay a $2,000 fine and commit no offences for two years.
Labe will also be subject to probation for 12 months after his release, and will be required to undergo alcohol and drug rehabilitation.
Labe could have faced up to 10 years behind bars after pleading guilty in January to causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.
The incident took place on 21st September in the midst of Australia’s same-sex marriage debate, however Labe said he didn’t confront Abbott simply over his views on marriage, but because he believes Abbott is an “evil c*nt”.
“It was nothing really remotely to do with [SSM],” he said.
“It’s just about Tony Abbott, the fucking worm that he is. All it was is I saw Tony Abbott and I’d had half a skinful and I wanted to nut the c*nt.”
Labe allegedly told Abbott, “You f***ing deserved it,” following the incident, and Abbott suffered a slightly swollen bottom lip from the knock.
A court today heard that Labe told police he was “six out of 10” drunk at the time.
