Upon first listen of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, it was pretty clear that if any of the 11 songs were going to be a single, it was ‘Four out of Five’. Now, Arctic Monkeys have given that song a video and it is a trip.
If you’ve spent the whole weekend listening to the album like we did, then you’ll know that the record is packed to the brim with filmic references with particular attention to sci-fi. Even their promotional cycle incorporated film, with pop-up shops happening at cinemas across the globe upon the album’s release.
The video for ‘Four out of Five’ reflects that completely, with obvious visual homages to the late and great Stanley Kubrick. Directed by Ben Chappell and Aaron Brown, it features two versions of frontman Alex Turner – one of him in a mansion overlooking a model of what can only be the ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’ and one of him, beardless and hair slicked back, skulking around the mansion’s underbelly. We honestly have no clue what’s going on but we like it.
