Despite Sir Elton John not being young, dumb or broke, the music legend has given us a cover of young gun Khalid‘s mega hit ‘Young, Dumb & Broke.’
John has completely reinvented the song – which charted at #13 on last year’s triple j‘s Hottest 100 – and even features some backing vocals from Khalid himself.
In addition to the track, John has also released a rework of his classic ‘Bennie and the Jets’. Listen to both below.
Sir Elton John has showed no shyness in displaying his affinity for Khalid, saying last year that he wants to collaborate with him – which of course he has now done. “New artist wise, Khalid,” Sir Elton said in an interview with Beats 1, “I love Khalid.”
In a statement given alongside the release, John explained how the cover came together.
“I discovered Khalid’s music a few years ago, and have been a fan ever since. We finally met when I played his home town of El Paso last year.”
“It’s a thrill to be a small part of any new artist’s journey, and it’s been wonderful to see his star continue to rise and rise. ‘Young Dumb & Broke’ is a fabulous song, one of my favourites and I’m really pleased that he liked my cover enough to contribute vocals.”
We’re sure that choice wasn’t hard for Khalid. Speaking of the superstar, Khalid will be in the country for his third time in a year over the NYE period, performing at Origin Fields in WA alongside acts like Cardi B and Tash Sultana.
