Famed producer and ambient pioneer Brian Eno has had an honour bestowed upon him, receiving a certificate that declares an asteroid named after him.
The full name of the asteroid is Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno – “Eno” for short – which is arguably a bit more exciting than its previous title, 81948 (2000 OM69). Eno was selected for the honour by astronomer Marc Buie of the Southwest Research Institute, who discovered the asteroid.
It’s been a pretty good run lately for Eno receiving science-related accolades. Earlier in the week, he received the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication at the science festival Starmus V in Zurich, Switzerland, for his “contribution to the popularisation of science.”
The honours come along with the similarly spacey Eno news of an extended edition of his 1983 album Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks. It will feature the music he wrote for the documentary For All Mankind, along with 11 new compositions made with brother Roger Eno along with Daniel Lanois. It’s due out July 19th.
