Peter Murphy, singer of legendary post-punk Bauhaus, was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York on Tuesday (13th October) after suffering a shortness of breath, with it later confirmed the frontman had suffered a heart attack.
“Mr. Murphy was admitted for treatment of a myocardial infarction,” said cardiologist Dr. Jason Song. “He had two stents placed in his right coronary artery and was started on medications to manage his heart condition. Due to HIPAA regulations we cannot reveal further details of his condition. He is still in the hospital for continued monitoring of his condition.”
Murphy was scheduled to perform a residency at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge dates this week, and has been forced to postpone the shows. His family has released a statement, thanking fans for their understanding.
“We would like to thank the fans for their undying support and hope that Peter will be back on stage with a refreshed heart, stronger than before.”
As Rolling Stone points out, it’s not the first time Murphy has been unable to perform due to health problems. The singer had to pull out of an extensive tour with Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance in 2010, and a vocal cord issue forced him to postpone a San Francisco residency in 2017.
