Elsy Wameyo has been busy working hard as one of Adelaide’s brightest stars with her energetic take on R&B, but with her latest single ‘Outcast’, she’s taken a more soulful approach at a very important topic.
Written about the violence and oppression within and directed towards the African community, ‘Outcast’, in Wameyo’s words, serves as a reminder that the community never forgets how special and important their blackness and their culture are.
“I wrote this song because I see and feel the pain of being black,” she said in a statement.
“Just another outcast. I too struggle to fit in but I don’t want to, and will not, conform. This message is for my black kings and queens, so that you may understand the significance, beauty and richness of your blackness. Don’t you ever forget who you are, where you come from. Your culture, your home.”
To coincide with the song’s release, Wameyo has dropped an understated yet deeply moving video directed by Nick Anastei.
