Australian disco revivalist Donny Benét will release his fifth album, Mr Experience, on Friday, 22nd May via Dot Dash/Remote Control. He’s shared two singles from the record so far – ‘Girl of My Dreams’ and ‘Second Dinner’ – and now the boogie king has shared the album’s title track.
“The song concept came as a suggestion to me. I get suggestions all the time and they never stick – This one did! I like the intro on this one – it’s kind of like a mid 80’s Japanese game show introduction that goes into a little Chic vibe. It’s no secret that I’m a huge Bernard Edwards fan and I tried to play this bass line with as light a touch as possible,” commented Donny on the track’s origin.
“Who is Mr Experience? What is he experienced in? Apparently making good scrambled eggs is a huge talent, one that requires a lot of knowledge! It is the title track, and I think it’s an appropriate follow-up album title after The Don.”
According to The Don, Mr Experience sees the musician embrace a new sincerity, moving away from the irony-laden output that has earmarked much of his back catalogue. In other words, Mr Experience sees ol’ Donny grow up a little, with a lyrical and thematic maturity that sits alongside musical influence from Bryan Ferry and Hiroshi Yoshimura.
Benét’s touring plans have been postponed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, now set to take place in Australia in October. Listen to ‘Mr Experience’ – and check out rescheduled national tour dates – below.
