The Tote Celebrates 30 Years of Live Music

Iconic Melbourne music venue The Tote will celebrate 30 years of live music in November with a month-long celebration of line-ups curated by bands, musicians and organisations including The Meanies, The Onyas, Gareth Liddiard, The Age EG, Inpress and Mess+Noise.

Over the past 30 years, The Tote has evolved into one of Melbourne’s most influential music venues and has played an integral part in Melbourne’s musical landscape with bands such as The White Stripes, The Lemonheads, Mike Patton, The Dirty Three, Jay Reatard, The Dirtbombs, Hoodoo Gurus, You Am I, Spiderbait, Silverchair, Paul Kelly, The Drones, The Cosmic Psychos and Magic Dirt all gracing The Tote’s well-worn stage.

The Tote has proudly played host to some of Melbourne’s most definitive and treasured Rock’n’Roll memories; The White Stripes playing to a handful of people, that Mudhoney gig featuring intermittent contributions from the late Ian Rilen, Evan Dando taking up residence (literally) at The Tote, Melbourne’s tight-knit music community coming together to successfully “Save The Tote” in 2009, which also served as the catalyst for the historic SLAM Rally – where 20,000+ music lovers banded together with one voice to protest against the Victorian Government’s Liquor Licensing laws and Joel Silbersher joining The Drones to belt out a legendary rendition of GOD’s My Pal on what was (at the time) thought to be the last song that would ever be performed at The Tote.

From the famous jukebox, to the artists and bands that have played within The Tote’s hallowed walls, to the once sticky carpet and all the memories in between, you would be hard pressed to find a live music loving soul who doesn’t cherish at least one foggy memory of a night at The Tote.

Come together and celebrate 30 years of live music at The Tote in November!
