PREMIERE: Cloning Capture Isolation And Yearning With ‘Past in Our Pockets’ Video

WA indie rockers Cloning dropped latest single ‘Past in Our Pockets’ last week. It’s a meditative reflection on growing apart from the people you were once close with, above a backdrop of lush, melodic guitars and driving, energetic rhythms.

“When we were writing the song I was thinking about how relationships can change over time as we get older,” explains the band’s Felix Parker. “It’s a bittersweet feeling because change can be a good thing, but it’s also hard to accept falling out of touch with old friends and loved ones.”

The accompanying video, which we’re premiering here today at Music Feeds, sees the four-piece dwell on that notion.

Co-directed with Jake Crawford (responsible for Psychedelic Porn Crumpets‘ WAM Award-winning clip for ‘Social Candy’), the video for ‘Past in Our Pockets’ sees each band member in a separate rooms for most of the clip, passing nostalgic objects between them before eventually coming together to perform the track. It’s a colourful, gorgeously-shot video that perfectly captures isolation and yearning – particularly relevant themes for 2020.

The clip also reflects how the song came together itself. Each member of Cloning worked through over 20 different arrangements of ‘Past in Our Pockets’ remotely in lockdown before reuniting to record the final version with Dave Parkin (whose name you might recognise from producing fellow WA act Spacey Jane‘s recent debut album Sunlight).

“A lot of the spaced out ambient sounds you hear during the song are guitar sounds that were recorded at home and messed up heaps,” says guitarist Bevan Green.

“These same sounds from our home demos ended up in the final studio version; because they were made in the spur of the moment we pretty much couldn’t recreate them.”
