Pussy Riot, the Russian punk rock protest group, has found unlikely collaborators in Dorian Electra and 100 gecs‘ Dylan Brady for new song, ‘Toxic’.
The song is as chaotic and as intense as one would expect from a collaboration of the three acts, with the face of Pussy Riot, Nadya Tolokonnikova, offering haunting vocal interplay with Electra.
In a statement shared with Pitchfork, Tolokonnikova said, “‘TOXIC’ is political, because personal is political. The single reflects on the importance of self-care, cherishing your mental health and staying away from relationships that poison you.”
She also said, “A few years ago I went through an emotionally abusive relationship (that ended up being physically abusive, too—I was being held against my will in a house we lived in). The best way to process trauma for me is via creating art, that’s why we wrote ‘TOXIC’ with Dorian and Dylan.”
The video is also incredibly hectic, but does utilise flashing lights and depicts fake blood – so watch only if you’re able to.
