Over the weekend, Gang of Youths played their first headline gig in two years at Lafayette in their new home of London, with a livestream of the show also broadcast on TikTok for Aussie fans last night.
The band kicked off their set with ‘The Angel of 8th Ave.’, the single they returned with back in June, marking their first new music since 2017. As GOY fansite Deepest Sighs reported, apart from a slew of favourites from across their back catalogue (‘The Heart Is a Muscle’, ‘Let Me Down Easy’, ‘Let Me Down Easy’), frontman Dave Le’aupepe also debuted a new song solo on piano titled ‘Brothers’, about his family dealing with his father’s death.
According to a user on Deepest Sighs‘ forum, towards the end of the set, Le’aupepe also appeared to confirm the band’s new album was “on its way” (or something to that effect), so fingers crossed we get more news on that soon. The follow-up to 2017’s Go Farther in Lightness will mark the band’s first album since they found a new member in former Noah and the Whale member Tom Hobden, who replaced founding guitarist Joji Malani after his departure in 2019.
Last month, the band surprise-released a three-track EP titled total serene, which featured ‘The Angel of 8th Ave.’ along with two other tracks, ‘Asleep in the Back’ and ‘Unison’, which also made it into the set at the band’s Lafayette show.
