Britney Spears‘ attorney, Mathew Rosengart, has accused the singer’s father, Jamie Spears, of extortion for trying to secure around $2 million USD in payments in exchange for him stepping down from the conservatorship that has prevented Britney from having control over her estate and her life.
The first petition to completely remove and suspend Jamie from the conservatorship was submitted on 26th July. The petition asked to instead put forensic accountant Jason Rubin as the head of the arrangement.
Rosengart yesterday filed a supplemental petition on Britney’s behalf, to attempt to immediately remove Jamie from the conservatorship. Deadline reported that as part of the “transition process”, Jamie is trying to negotiate around $2 million USD in payments in exchange for his removal. The petition posted by the publication says these payments will be put towards legal fees, attorneys, and paid to various other parties.
“Britney Spears will not be extorted,” the document reads. “Mr Spears’ blatant attempt to barter suspension and removal in exchange for approximately $2 million in payments, on top of the millions already reaped from Ms Spears’ estate by Mr Spears and his associates, is a non-starter.”
“The only honorable, decent, and humane course of action is for Mr. Spears to resign now, provide all necessary information to evaluate his accounting, and, if matters cannot be resolve consensually, to try to defend his accounting.”
A date to address the petition and the supplemental petition has been set for 29th September.
The news comes a few weeks after Jamie first agreed to step down as conservator of Britney’s estate and life.
“We are pleased that Mr Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed,” Rosengart said.
He said that the agreement was “a major victory for Britney Spears and another step toward justice.”
