This year’s National Indigenous Music Awards have moved to a reimagined radio format after organisers were forced to pull the plug on the live event in Darwin for the second year in a row. This year’s awards ceremony was originally scheduled to take place in early August, but was postponed due to coronavirus-related restrictions around the country.
Instead, the event will now run as a two-hour special on Sunday, 14th November on triple j, Double J and triple j Unearthed on Sunday, 14th November, with exclusive performances and live crosses to communities around Australia.
It will be hosted by Nooky, host of triple j’s weekly First Nations program, Blak Out. “I’m pumped to be hosting the NIMAs and celebrating the mob,” he said. “It’s been a big year for Blak music and it’s mad we get to celebrate it here on Blak Out.”
In a statement, NIMAs creative director Ben Graetz said that while it was unfortunate that the live event was unable to go ahead at the Darwin Amphitheatre this year, he was “extremely excited to be working with Nooky and all the team at triple j, celebrating musical Blak Excellence through the radio”.
This year’s NIMAs were announced back in July, with The Kid LAROI, Baker Boy and Sycco leading the nominations.
