Thelma Plum has returned, sharing new single ‘Backseat of My Mind’. It’s her first new original music since her ARIA-winning debut album, 2019’s Better in Blak, and follows a stunning cover of Powderfinger‘s ‘These Days’ and Briggs collaboration ‘Go to War’, both of which arrived in 2020.
Opening as a pensive, piano-driven ballad, Plum’s latest swells to a soaring chorus about driving forward and abandoning what you need to. “As I look in the rear view mirror, I leave it behind / In the backseat of my mind,” Plum sings.
“I’ve spent a lot of time in vans,” Plum says of the new song. “I really wanted to write a nostalgic feeling ‘driving’ song, which I hope we nailed. It’s been so fun to play live I can’t wait for people to hear the recorded version.”
Fans will have plenty more opportunities to see Plum perform ‘Backseat of My Mind’ in the coming weeks. Her regional Making It Up to You tour kicks off tonight (26th May) in Gosford, with dates in Castlemaine, Torquay and Kingscliff in June.
Sandwiched in between, she’ll perform four shows with Paul Kelly at the Sydney Opera House as part of this year’s Vivid Live lineup, beginning tomorrow night (Friday, 27th May) and continuing on Saturday, Sunday and next Tuesday. Later in the year, she’ll play outdoor amphitheatres across the country, supporting Vance Joy on his 2022 tour.
