An awful lot of people are talking about Kate Bush‘s 1985 single ‘Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God).’ That sharp uptick follows the song’s prominent usage in the latest season of Stranger Things, which landed last week.
Globally, there’s been a significant jump in plays of the Hounds of Love standout. There’s been a 153% rise in Spotify streams of the track, with data from the platform reporting an 8700% increase in global streams compared to its total last Thursday (26th May); the day before Stranger Things‘ season four premiere on Netflix.
There’s been a huge surge in popularity down here, too. On Spotify’s Australian chart of the most played tracks, ‘Running Up That Hill’ is in the number one spot, currently sitting at over 294,000 daily streams. It’s unseated the second-most-played song, Harry Styles‘ ‘As It Was’, which is getting around 275,000 daily streams. On Apple Music, ‘Running Up That Hill’ is trailing just behind ‘As It Was’.
While ARIA singles chart data won’t be available until tomorrow (Friday, 3rd June), that chart’s informed largely by streaming plays, meaning ‘Running Up That Hill’ is very likely to top this week’s chart.
‘As It Was’ has spent eight weeks at the top. Seven other cuts from Styles’ new album Harry’s House – ‘Late Night Talking’, ‘Matilda’, ‘Music for a Sushi Restaurant’, ‘Little Freak’, ‘Daylight’, ‘Grapejuice’ and ‘Satellite’ – are in the top 10. We’ll find out shortly if Bush’s Stranger Things-assisted resurgence is enough to knock ol’ Harry off the throne.
