Massive Attack are hoping to revolutionise the music industry by organising a one-day festival that’ll be powered entirely by renewable energy. The event is set to take place on Sunday, 25th August, 2024, on Clifton Downs in the group’s home town of Bristol, UK. The trip hop outfit seek to provide a blueprint for sustainability in the music world, with all electricity at the festival battery or solar-powered.
Founding member Robert Del Naja explained that all the necessary technology is available to reduce an event’s environmental impact. “There’s always talk about ‘I’ll just wait for technology,'” he said, “but the technology is available – there are ways of doing it.”
Massive Attack previously partnered with green industrialist Dale Vince on creating sustainable venues across the UK
Massive Attack previously partnered with green industrialist Dale Vince and his company Ecotricity to enhance renewables capacity and introduce sustainability in operations across UK venues. At the time, Del Naja stressed the need for implementation and urged government action.
He emphasised the absence of a plan for clean technology investment in the sector, which annually contributes over £4.6 billion to the UK economy, urging authorities to match support for fossil fuel companies with commitments to clean energy infrastructure.
To meet Paris Climate Agreement goals, the live music sector would need to achieve zero emissions from buildings and surface travel by 2035.
