Spacey Jane have shared their first new music in nearly two years: a stand-alone single entitled ‘One Bad Day’. The song was written by the band not long after the release of their second studio album, Here Comes Everybody. Not feeling as though it fit with the next batch of material written for their third album, but also not wanting to shelve the song entirely, the band ultimately decided to share it as a stop-gap release ahead of their third album cycle to come later in 2024.
“To me it, feels like it’s the perfect bookend for this album cycle,” said Caleb Harper, the band’s lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, in a press statement. “t was too late for Here Comes Everybody and doesn’t seem to fit in with our next record. At the same time, we really love the song [and] we want to see it out in the world… so [we] found it a place in between albums as a way to say thank you to [our] fans and scratch an itch of our own before we start rolling out LP3.”
Spacey Jane – ‘One Bad Day’
2023 saw Spacey Jane release a deluxe edition of Here Comes Everybody, which featured a reworked version of single ‘Lots Of Nothing’ with new vocals from Benee, as well as a live version of ‘Hardlight’ and two songs that were ultimately left off the album: ‘Sorry Instead’ and ‘Is This What You Wanted’. They began the year with six placements in the 2022 Hottest 100, with ‘Hardlight’ peaking at number 3, tying Wolfmother‘s record from 2005 for the most entries from a single artist in one countdown.
Aside from a regional tour mid-year, Spacey Jane’s 2023 touring in Australia was largely focused on festival appearances including Bassinthegrass, Grapevine Gathering, Rolling Sets and Changing Tides. In a post to their Instagram announcing the release of ‘One Bad Day’ last week, the band explained that their reduced touring schedule was done in order to “reset, to write new
music that we were proud of and excited about, and to figure out how we wanted to
grow over the next couple of years.”
We’re almost back from our little hibernation, our third album is about halfway recorded and we’re really, really excited to start sharing it with you,” they said.
