Meanjin/Brisbane rock ‘n’ roll outfit Full Flower Moon Band have just shared their third studio album, Megaflower, with the world. Following on from a huge run of shows in the UK, including a showcase at The Great Escape, and recent support for Pond upon returning to Brisbane, the band are hitting their stride and poised to continue to bloom as they embark on an Australian headline tour throughout August and September (suss those dates down below).
“We could have easily not challenged ourself, but made a point of going through a real metamorphosis with every song,” the band’s figurehead, Kate “Babyshakes” Dillon, shares in a press statement about the new record. And in the spirit of those themes of positive growth and metamorphosis, she’s shared her five top tips on how you, too, can blossom like a Megaflower. Cop some wisdom down below.
Full Flower Moon Band – Megaflower
1. Challenge Yourself
Challenging yourself opens up new possibilities and opportunities. I intentionally didn’t want to make a copy of our last record, ‘Diesel Forever’. It’s a record we are really proud of, but it’s important to me that we keep experimenting. A part of that was expanding how we arrange songs and incorporating more influences. The whole band listens to a pretty broad range of music – we pushed the sound while still remaining Full Flower Moon Band. It could go a lot further, but where it landed is tasteful.
2. Ignore The Pressure
The pressure you feel while doing something new and different, like making a new record, is always present. Every album has a whole new set of challenges, and they are just going to be different. The cliff-edge is omnipresent, and it’s been up to me to ignore it and make an album with real twists and turns to it. I ended up having a lot of fun with it.
3. Surround Yourself With Good People
It’s important to surround yourself with people you trust who can support you to do your best. We’re lucky as a band to have a pretty good shorthand in the studio. This is the first FFMB album made with players who are now a permanent lineup, before going into the studio. Then adding Tony Buchen to mix the record was special – he helped us hear what we’d done on each song with fresh ears and expanded it further.
4. Have Fun
There are plenty of good love songs in the world. I find it so satisfying to write things that are a bit ‘inverted’. These days I try not to underestimate the audience, and I’m writing assuming that everyone just gets it. Humour or sarcasm creates a sense of intimacy with a listener that can be really powerful. It’s just a different angle, I guess.
5. Be Fearless
I was just so appreciative when Diesel Forever was well received. But that’s out in the world now, so the most generous thing I could do is try other ideas, even if I don’t know what the outcome will be. I don’t like to be stagnant, and experimenting is learning. If anything off this record doesn’t land, then I know for next time – to me, that’s an act of love and commitment to the craft—a long-term relationship. I hope people enjoy the generosity of that emotion, pick up on the fearlessness of it, and get a sense of fearlessness themselves – because that’s what it took.
