Sweden has won this year’s Eurovision song contest in Azerbaijan overnight – with the country’s female songstress Loreen reigning supreme with her song Euphoria.
Loreen prevailed over local fan favourites – Russian grandmas Buranovskiye Babushki – with Serbian veteran Zeljko Joksimovic coming third. The host country and defending champion – Azerbaijan’s Sabina Babayeva – finished fourth.
Earlier in the week, Loreen was criticised by Azerbaijan authorities for meeting with protesters who are accusing the government of forcing people from their homes for the building of the Eurovision arena.
The win is Sweden’s fifth victory in the infamous song contest – and its first since Charlotte Nilsson in 1999. It also means Sweden will host next year’s Eurovision – so, for those who aren’t fans of the music, at least we’ve got a good chance of seeing some hot female presenters.
Here’s a clip of Loreen’s winning performance. If you want to relive all the Eurovision gold – the Grand Final will be on SBS tonight from 7.30pm.
