Silverchair bass player Chris Joannou has confirmed that the all-conquering Newcastle trio have definitely not ruled out a reunion in the coming years.
Speaking on the eve of the Rock N’ Ride journey that he is taking part in for national youth mental health initiative Headspace, Joannou said “the book is still open” when quizzed about the band’s future.
“Who knows, the book is still open, nothing’s closed. When it feels right, something will happen,” he said.
“There’s no plans, there’s nothing penciled in, we’ll just have to wait and see.”
Silverchair went into “indefinite hibernation” in mid-2011 – a move that was widely interpreted by critics as a split for the band. However, Joannou insists that they are on just another lengthy break to pursue their own endeavours, something that they have become notorious for over their 18-year-career.
“(The break) is nothing new for us. Every time we’ve had breaks, everyone’s been busy doing other projects and I think it’s a really healthy approach.”
Joannou’s comments follow on from those of drummer Ben Gillies, who told Tone Deaf last year that Silverchair still have an unfinished sixth album lying around – and is confident that they will finish it off “one day”.
Gillies released a solo album last year under his new moniker Bento, and is expected to do a small tour in 2013. Frontman Daniel Johns is rumoured to be working on a solo album, and will be appearing on stage as a special guest at Van Dyke Parkes’ concert as part of the Adelaide Festival at Thebarton Theatre on March 8.
Johns also composed music for a film with Josh Wakely – My Mind’s Own Melody – of which a trailer was released mid last year.
