Hip hop festival Hype has hit troubled waters before organisers even had a chance to announce anything concrete, though despite earlier reports promoter John Denison has indicated that the festival has only been postponed, not cancelled entirely.
Denison, a Supafest founder, first broke the news of his latest endeavour back in April with the promise of a new summer urban music festival set for November, teasing a lineup that featured one artist who had never toured here before, one that was a “legend” and two other “very, very cool” acts.
It was as recently as May when the last update came, with Denison tweeting that the bill was totally locked in.
While we can’t cross this event off our summer festival calendar just yet, as Denison has indicated that the event is only postponed with new times “nearly right”, the promoter has so far offered little by way of explanation for the reschedule, responding to one inquiry only that “hip hop festivals [are] in a mess”.
This could mean that Hype has come up against some clashes with Supafest, who themselves postponed just days out from their April launch. Supafest eventually rescheduled for October/November, putting the rival festivals head to head.
Now, though, it looks as if Supafest has the marketplace to itself yet again – assuming it actually happens, that is.
