Grammar nerds, rejoice. Sisters Rachael and Eliza Hurwitz have given us It’s Finally Ironic, a parody of Alanis Morissette‘s 1996 hit Ironic, a song mainly remembered for being full of examples of irony that aren’t actually, uh, ironic.
The Hurwitz sisters have got your back, changing lyrics like “It’s a black fly in your chardonnay” to “It’s a black fly in your chardonnay that was specifically purchased to repel black flies” and “It’s a death row pardon two minutes too late” becomes “It’s a death row pardon that causes your demise because you leave the jail and get hit by a bus.”
It’s Finally Ironic comes complete with parody of the original clip, which featured four Alanises in a car, although we’d recommend refreshing your memory on the original before you watch this one, otherwise it’s just some weird chicks stuffing baguettes in their mouths.
Morissette has previously commented on criticism of the song, saying she wasn’t “doggedly making sure that everything was technically ironic”, which would be all well and dandy except there isn’t a single correct example of irony in the original. No word on whether the Canadian singer-songwriter has seen the parody, but Rachael Hurwitz told Today that would be “the hugest compliment”, citing Alanis as one of her musical influences.
