After his Oscar-winning effort for the last Muppets movie, Flight of the Conchords‘ Bret McKenzie has revealed that he’s working on another puppet-heavy musical. The New Zealand comedian/musician has said that his as-yet untitled project is inspired by the 1986 film Labyrinth.
McKenzie first mentioned the project in a 2011 interview when he spoke of a Jim Henson-inspired comedy-musical that was on the horizon, and he recently told Collider, “I’m in the middle of a script for a kind of… It hasn’t got a name yet but it’s a fairy tale comedy musical, sort of akin to Labyrinth or something like that.”
The Rhymnoceros himself says the project is moving along steadily, but there’s no official timeline yet:
“I’m developing and that script’s halfway through. James Bobin’s helping me. I’m the official writer but we’re developing it. I want to make a comedy musical with singing dragons and monsters and stuff. [It’s] live-action, so it would be a mixture of The Muppets and The Princess Bride.”
McKenzie received critical acclaim, including an Oscar, for his work as music supervisor on the new Muppets series. In addition to his work with the famous Henson creations, McKenzie also had a role in Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of The Hobbit.
We can expect to hear more on McKenzie’s much anticipated pet project following the March 2014 release of Muppets Most Wanted, the next instalment in the rebooted Muppets franchise. In the meantime, check out McKenzie’s Oscar-winning effort from the 2012 Muppets movie below.
